Blue marlin fishing out of South Padre Island starts at the Brazos Santiago Pass jetties and runs past 25 miles to the shelf edge and the Texas FAD buoys, about 50 miles offshore. If you run your own boat from South Padre Island, this page gives the distances, the named structure and the local methods. The port page has the pass, ramp and marina detail.

The nearshore reefs are probably familiar already, so this page picks up where they end. It covers this one port only; the blue marlin fishing guide carries biology and general tactics. We can’t promise fish, but we can help you decide where to look.

When blue marlin are off South Padre Island

When blue marlin are off South Padre Island

Two listings anchor the timing: a tournament in early August and a charter trip that starts in Nov.

Early August: TIFT

The TIFT offshore division species list includes blue marlin. The tournament runs in early August and is the one fixed marker for dockside blue marlin out of this port.

From Nov: FAD trips

Reel Madness lists a 14 to 16 hour marlin/FAD trip starting in Nov, with no end month listed. For the wider seasonal picture, see blue marlin across the wider Gulf (see also the Gulf of Mexico fishing guide).

How far boats run and where

How far boats run and where

Every run goes out through the pass and then by distance: the jetties, then about 25 miles, about 30, and about 50.

Brazos Santiago Pass jetties and BZST2

The North and South jetties flank the pass entrance to the Gulf, and every offshore run from South Padre Island leaves between them.

Before you leave the jetties, read NDBC/TCOON station BZST2 (8779749), SPI Brazos Santiago, TX, at 26.067N 97.155W. Compare its wind and water numbers with the Brownsville coastal waters forecast before you commit. Chart layers are not for navigation.

About 25 miles: where billfish can start

SaltWalker reports billfish as close as 25 miles out. Treat that as the near edge of the search, not a promise.

About 30 miles: the shelf edge

The continental shelf edge starts to drop around 30 miles off South Padre Island, just beyond SaltWalker’s 25-mile mark.

About 50 miles: the FADs in about 1,300 ft

Reel Madness trolls deep water and the Texas FAD buoys, in about 1,300 ft of water about 50 miles offshore. A 50-mile run out means about 100 miles of round-trip running before the first bait goes in. FishingBooker also lists oil rigs, covered in the next section.

Grounds and structure on the run

Grounds and structure on the run

The nearshore sites (Texas Clipper, Port Isabel Reef, RGV Reef) are waypoints on the run, not marlin water. The deep structure is the FADs, the rigs and the shelf edge.

Name Depth Distance Notes
Brazos Santiago Pass jetties (North and South) Flank the pass entrance to the Gulf
Port Isabel Reef 75 ft Nearshore waypoint
Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Reef Nearshore waypoint
Texas Clipper 134 ft About 17 nm Nearshore waypoint
Continental shelf edge Starts to drop around 30 miles
Texas FAD network (Hilton / Houston Big Game Fishing Club buoys) About 1,300 ft About 50 miles (Reel Madness) Trolled by Reel Madness
Deep-water oil rigs (incl. Perdido) Listed by FishingBooker

Port Isabel Reef

Port Isabel Reef lies in 75 ft of water and serves as a nearshore waypoint.

RGV Reef

RGV Reef is a named artificial reef off the port. Use it as a nearshore waypoint on the way out.

Texas Clipper

The Texas Clipper sits in 134 ft about 17 nm off South Padre Island. The TPWD Texas Clipper reef page describes the wreck. Use it as a waypoint rather than as marlin water.

Texas FAD network: Hilton / Houston Big Game Fishing Club buoys

The Texas FAD buoys sit in about 1,300 ft of water. The network is tied to Hilton and the Houston Big Game Fishing Club, and Reel Madness trolls it.

Deep-water oil rigs, including Perdido

FishingBooker lists oil rigs among the structure fished from this port. Perdido is one of the deep-water rigs.

How it is fished locally and who fishes it

Local boats troll dead natural bait and artificial lures, and fish are fought from a fighting chair. For spreads and rigging beyond that, see billfish spreads and rigging.

Trolling from a fighting chair

Crews troll dead natural bait and artificial lures and fight fish from a fighting chair.

Catch and release

Texas Sportfish says marlin are strictly catch and release, which is how that operator fishes them.
