When albacore are off Trinidad

When albacore are off Trinidad

Albacore fishing out of Trinidad runs from late summer into early fall, and only for boats willing to go offshore. The fish follow warm water. When it sits within range, the run is on; when it doesn’t, there’s nothing to run to.

That makes this an opportunistic fishery for private boats. Some windows bring no fish within range of the port, so plan for that.

Coastwide timing is covered in our regional albacore guide (see also the wider Pacific Northwest guide). This page covers where boats run from Trinidad, the local landmarks, and what water to look for.

  • Season: late summer into early fall
  • Run: offshore, just north of Trinidad
  • Target: a temperature break with good chlorophyll

Where boats run from Trinidad

Boats run offshore to a zone just north of Trinidad. The sections below set out the geography for a North Coast private boat.

The offshore zone

The zone sits just north of Trinidad, roughly 30 miles from Humboldt Bay. That 30 miles is measured from the bay, not from Trinidad Pier, so don’t read it as a distance from the pier.

Trinidad Head and Trinidad Pier are your reference points on the way out. Humboldt Bay lies to the south, so a boat coming up from the bay runs north to reach the zone.

Planning the run

Before you leave the dock, check where the break sits against your boat’s fuel range, with a return reserve. A run that fits your range on the way out also has to fit it on the way back.

Read wind, wave height and period on the official NWS marine forecast before you commit, and decide from those numbers rather than how the harbor looks.

  • Fuel: match the break’s position to your range, with a return reserve
  • Forecast: read wind, wave height and period on the NWS marine forecast
  • Go or wait: if the break sits at the edge of your range, wait for it to move closer

The places below are landmarks and rockfish ground. Albacore don’t hold on them; they’re found on water offshore.

Name Depth Location Note
Reading Rock 80 ft About 20 miles north of Trinidad Head State marine reserve since 2012, covering about a quarter of the reef
Nearshore rockfish grounds 30 ft Between Trinidad Head and Sue-meg State Park (Patrick’s Point) Spire pinnacles and crevasse rock formations
Prisoner Rock – South of Trinidad Pier, inside Trinidad Bay Sea stack, harbor landmark
Little Head Rock – To the left of Trinidad Pier Harbor landmark

Reading Rock

Reading Rock sits about 20 miles north of Trinidad Head in 80 ft of water. It works as a reference landmark on the way north. About a quarter of the reef has been a state marine reserve since 2012.

Nearshore grounds and harbor landmarks

The ground between Trinidad Head and Sue-meg State Park (Patrick’s Point) runs 30 ft and has spire pinnacles and crevasse rock formations. It’s rockfish ground.

Prisoner Rock and Little Head Rock help you orient around Trinidad Pier. Prisoner Rock is a sea stack south of the pier, inside Trinidad Bay. Little Head Rock is to the left of the pier.

How albacore are fished from Trinidad

How albacore are fished from Trinidad

The local method is an offshore run to a temperature break that carries good chlorophyll. You find the water first, and the fishing follows.

Spreads, lures and gear are in our albacore tuna fishing guide. This section covers the water.

Reading the break

A break is where sea surface temperature changes over a short distance. The OBS SST layer shows it. Measure the break’s position against your fuel range before you leave, and use Chart Contours for bottom context. Chart layers are not for navigation.

Chlorophyll and clean water

The productive seam is where clean, warm water meets green, productive water. The Chlorophyll layer shows it, and a break that carries good chlorophyll is the one worth the run.

Cloud can block a satellite pass, and a clear-sky composite is a snapshot, not a promise. The charts show you where to look, but they can’t guarantee fish.

  1. Find the break on OBS SST.
  2. Check the color on Chlorophyll.
  3. Match it to your range with a return reserve.
  4. Read the forecast numbers before you leave.
