When Pacific halibut are off Eureka

When Pacific halibut are off Eureka

Pacific halibut fishing out of Eureka is an offshore fishery, worked on deep grounds outside Humboldt Bay. The Pacific halibut species guide covers the fish itself. This page covers the season, the grounds and the operators from this port. Launch and bar details for Humboldt Bay are on the Eureka port page. Region-wide coverage is in the wider Pacific Northwest guide.

The May to October window

Coastline Charters and 707 Sportfishing both say boats historically fish Pacific halibut here from May through October. That is the historical window and no guarantee of fish on any given day. The sources behind this page name no peak month.

The California Halibut Derby

The California Halibut Derby is held on Humboldt Bay, usually in July. It takes place in the bay and is separate from the offshore Pacific halibut grounds described below.

Where boats run and what holds fish

Where boats run and what holds fish

Eureka boats work a band of ground defined by line numbers rather than a single spot. Coastline Charters says fish are mostly taken up toward the Klamath River off Trinidad, out front of Eureka, and south to Cape Mendocino. The subsections below follow that run from the center outward.

The 48-line to the 53-line

The 48-line to the 53-line is the local shorthand for the Eureka halibut grounds. They lie offshore, north of the bay entrance, in about 280 ft of water. That depth determines the gear and the drift.

North toward Trinidad and Redding Rock

Coastline puts the north end of the run up toward the Klamath River off Trinidad. Redding Rock is a named ground in that direction.

South to Cape Mendocino

Fish are also taken out front of Eureka and south to Cape Mendocino. The Lost Coast rocks sit south of Eureka along the Lost Coast, and the Eel River Canyon is a named feature in the same southern water.

The North and South Jetties

The North and South Jetties mark the Humboldt Bay entrance, so every trip to these grounds starts and ends there. The 125-line albacore area, from the 46-line to the 38-line, is the port’s other offshore run.

Ground Where it sits
48-line to 53-line Offshore north of the bay entrance, about 280 ft
Redding Rock North, toward Trinidad and the Klamath River
Cape Mendocino and Lost Coast rocks South of Eureka, along the Lost Coast
Eel River Canyon South of the bay
North and South Jetties At the Humboldt Bay entrance

How halibut are fished out of Eureka

How halibut are fished out of Eureka

At about 280 ft, the gear has to hold bottom.

Heavy bottom gear

707 Sportfishing fishes heavy bottom gear on these grounds. At about 280 ft, that is the same deep-drop approach used for other bottom fish, scaled to Pacific halibut.

Black cod and hake

Black cod and hake are common bait-stealers on the grounds, and they will often get to your bait first.
