Vermilion snapper off Sebastian Inlet

Vermilion snapper off Sebastian Inlet

Vermilion snapper fishing out of Sebastian Inlet centers on about 85 ft, on small hard patches of bottom inside an 80 to 90 ft band. Boats from this port work those patches in winter and fall. The bottom fishing here is small-structure work, and a center console owner who finds the right patch is on the fish. The wider picture is in the vermilion snapper fishing in the Atlantic Southeast and the Atlantic Southeast region guide.

This page covers when the fish are around, how far boats run, what holds them, how it is fished locally and who fishes for them. For the inlet, the jetties, the T-dock and where to read the official forecast, see the Sebastian Inlet port guide. For biology and behavior, see the vermilion snapper species guide. This page covers local conditions only.

When vermilion are around

The season here is winter and fall. Those are the months when vermilion snapper are a target off this port, and the local signals below fit that window. Outside them you are making a different decision: other species, other bottom, other depths.

What the reports show

The Big Easy Fishing Charters’ monthly reports, written by Capt. Terry Wildey, list vermilion in February and September. In March, Big Easy reports fish at 160 ft and deeper.

Charter reports reflect where those boats fished. They do not survey every piece of bottom, so treat them as signals and not a map.

Month What Big Easy’s reports show
February Vermilion listed
March Fish at 160 ft and deeper
September Vermilion listed

Where boats run and what holds fish

Start in the 80 to 90 ft band, then look at the named structure, the deeper March move and the outer edge of the range. For reef fish more broadly along the coast, see the reef fish guides.

The 80 to 90 ft band

Boats work small pieces of bottom in 80 to 90 ft, centered on about 85 ft. The patches are small, so the target is the individual patch rather than the general area.

The Chart Contours layer can help you spot small changes in the 80 to 90 ft band before you run. Chart layers are not for navigation.

Named reefs and bottom

Named reefs and bottom

These are the named grounds inside or near vermilion depths:

Ground Depth Location
Indian River County offshore artificial reefs (eight reefs) 65 ft 11 to 12 miles east of Sebastian Inlet
Big Easy reef complex (named 85 and 90 ft reefs) 85 ft
Bottom north of Sebastian Inlet (unnamed) 100 ft Just north of Sebastian Inlet

The county reefs sit shallower than the core band, the Big Easy reefs sit in it, and the 100 ft bottom lies just north of the inlet.

Deeper in March

Big Easy reports fish at 160 ft and deeper in March, roughly double the depth of the core band. This is a charter signal and not a rule for every boat.

Landmarks and the outer edge

Three names give you reference points as you work out from the inlet:

  • Sebastian Inlet north and south jetties with the T-dock. The T-dock is the inlet’s dock area, and the inlet is your departure point.
  • Monster Hole. A shoal landmark.
  • Gulf Stream edge. The outer boundary of the offshore range.

For scale, the Nauti Girl swordfish drop grounds sit at 1600 ft, 35 to 45 miles offshore of Melbourne and Sebastian. That is far beyond vermilion water, nearly 19 times the 85 ft core depth.

How it is fished here

How it is fished here

The local method is simple tackle on small structure, and the main thing is staying on the patch.

Chicken rigs with squid

Locals fish vermilion on chicken rigs baited with squid. The rig puts more than one bait in the water column over the bottom. For general rigging, use the species guide linked above.

Fishing small patches

This is bottom fishing on small hard patches at about 85 ft. When you are off the patch, you are off the fish, so reset on the structure rather than fishing open bottom.

Who fishes for them from this port

Two local charters list vermilion snapper. Their reports and boats are the best local signals available.

The Big Easy Fishing Charters

The Big Easy Fishing Charters lists vermilion snapper. Capt. Terry Wildey writes the monthly reports behind the February, March and September signals above, and the reports name the Big Easy reef complex at 85 and 90 ft.

Nauti Girl Sportfishing

Nauti Girl Sportfishing charters list vermilion snapper. Capt. Scott Wigal runs the 22 ft Sea Chaser center console named Nauti Girl, so a similar boat is proof that a 22 ft center console fishes these grounds.
