When blue marlin are off Palm Beach

Blue marlin fishing out of Palm Beach is a summer fishery. FishingBooker’s West Palm Beach guide puts marlin hookups in summer, when bonito are around.

Bonito are the local marker for those hookups, so seeing them in summer means you are in the window the operators fish. The season tells you when to look; it doesn’t promise a fish.

Range, size and behavior are covered in our blue marlin fishing guide.

Where Palm Beach boats run for blue marlin

Where Palm Beach boats run for blue marlin

Palm Beach boats run far offshore into Gulf Stream water, and some go 52 miles east to West End in the Bahamas. Every trip starts at Palm Beach Inlet. Ramps, marinas and inlet conditions are on the Palm Beach port page.

Gulf Stream run-and-gun

Run-and-gun means covering a lot of Gulf Stream water. You run until you find weed lines or floating debris, fish them, then move on. The methods section below covers how.

Palm Beach sits inside Sailfish Alley, the Gulf Stream corridor from Fort Pierce to North Miami Beach. For the wider picture, read blue marlin off the Atlantic Southeast (see also the Atlantic Southeast region guide).

West End day trips

Reel Intense trolls for blue marlin on summer Bahamas day trips. West End is 52 miles from Palm Beach. Check the NWS coastal waters forecast before the crossing and use the wind, wave height and period it gives. Rules for the Bahamas side are in the Regulations section.

Grounds and structure off Palm Beach Inlet

Grounds and structure off Palm Beach Inlet

Between Palm Beach Inlet and Gulf Stream marlin water, boats cross a series of named wrecks, ledges and edges, each holding its own fish. They are landmarks and edges on the way out, and none of them is a marlin spot.

Name Depth (ft) Location note
M/V Ana Cecilia 80-85 1 mile offshore of Singer Island
Danny McCauley Memorial Reef (tug) 80 1 mile offshore of Singer Island; part of the Wreck Trek
120 ft ledge (kingfish edge) 120 Offshore of the inlet
Bridge Reef and the Playground 100-200 –
Sailfish ledge 120-200 About 20 minutes from Palm Beach Inlet
Wahoo edges 100-300 Offshore edge
The Hill 200-300 Further out than the sailfish ledge
Sailfish Alley – Gulf Stream corridor, Fort Pierce to North Miami Beach

The named ledges show on Chart Contours. Chart layers are not for navigation.

Nearshore wrecks

The Ana Cecilia sits in 80 to 85 ft and the McCauley tug in 80 ft, both 1 mile off Singer Island. The tug is part of the Wreck Trek. Treat both as landmarks on the way out.

120 ft ledge

The ledge sits in 120 ft, offshore of the inlet. "120 ft ledge" is Mallard’s name for the kingfish edge.

Sailfish ledge

This ledge has no formal name. It sits in 120 to 200 ft, about 20 minutes from Palm Beach Inlet.

Bridge Reef and the Playground

Bridge Reef and the Playground sit in 100 to 200 ft.

Wahoo edges

The 100 to 300 ft offshore edges are where wahoo are worked.

The Hill

The Hill sits in 200 to 300 ft, further out than the sailfish ledge. It is a blackfin tuna spot.

Sailfish Alley

Sailfish Alley is the Gulf Stream corridor from Fort Pierce to North Miami Beach, and it is the water the run-and-gun trips work. West End, at 52 miles, is the far end of the run.

How blue marlin are fished here

How blue marlin are fished here

Locally, blue marlin are fished by trolling and chumming around weed lines and floating debris. Those are the places to look, though a weed line doesn’t guarantee a bite.

Trolling weed lines and debris

Boats troll along weed lines and past floating debris in Gulf Stream water. This is the working method behind run-and-gun trips, and it is what Reel Intense does on its West End days.

Chumming

Chumming is the second local method, used around the same weed lines and floating debris.
