Pacific Halibut Fishing Out of Trinidad: When the Fish Are Around

Northwind Charters says Pacific halibut generally open in April and May. Northwind runs from Eureka, so its timing is a regional read for the North Coast rather than a date specific to Trinidad. For the whole coast, see the Pacific Northwest fishing guide.

Trinidad is a small cove east of Trinidad Head. The Trinidad port guide covers the harbor, launch and local water, and the Pacific halibut guide covers biology and range. The actual opener is set by the agencies; see the Regulations section below.

Where Boats Run

Where Boats Run (Pacific halibut fishing out of Trinidad)

Prisoner Rock Charters says its halibut grounds run from the Eureka area up to Reading Rock, about 40 miles. Trinidad sits inside that spread, so the first decision is direction: south toward Eureka or north toward Reading Rock. Run distance follows from that choice.

Eureka to Reading Rock

  • South end: the Eureka area
  • North end: Reading Rock
  • Spread: about 40 miles, per Prisoner Rock Charters

Trinidad is the midpoint boats leave from, and each direction has its own time and fuel plan.

Reading Rock and the Reserve

Reading Rock lies about 20 miles north of Trinidad Head and is the northern bound of the grounds. About a quarter of the reef has been inside a state marine reserve since 2012, so know where the Reading Rock State Marine Reserve boundary sits before running north. The Regulations section below points to where the rules live.
