Where boats run from Rock Harbor

Where boats run from Rock Harbor

Rock Harbor boats run offshore at first light for the early bite and fish the bay later. For the wider picture, see the Northeast regional picture (see also the Atlantic Northeast region guide).

  • Stellwagen Bank: offshore, named by Liberty as an early-bite destination.
  • The Backside: the other early-bite destination Liberty names.
  • Canyons: not run from this port.

Stellwagen Bank and the Backside

Liberty names both as the grounds Rock Harbor boats run to for the early tuna bite.

Why boats leave early

Liberty says an early departure is needed to reach Stellwagen Bank or the Backside for the early tuna bite.

Canyon trips are a Hyannis thing

Helen H tuna trips are canyon trips from Hyannis, not from this port. Keep that in mind when comparing ports.

The bay has a sharp depth contrast over a short stretch of water. The table lays it out.

Ground Depth (ft) Note
Billingsgate Shoal 15 Shoal top rarely deeper than 15 ft
The Square 90 Old-timers’ name for the deeper water west of Billingsgate
Off Sesuit Harbor 80 Open-water school area out into Cape Cod Bay
Brewster and Dennis reef n/a Proposed, not confirmed built
Stellwagen Bank n/a Offshore

Billingsgate’s 15 ft top and the 90 ft water to its west show clearly on Chart Contours. Chart layers are not for navigation.

Billingsgate Shoal, 15 ft

The shoal top is rarely deeper than 15 ft.

The Square, 90 ft

Open water off Sesuit, 80 ft

This school area sits in about 80 ft, out into Cape Cod Bay from Sesuit Harbor.

The proposed Brewster and Dennis reef

The Brewster and Dennis artificial reef is proposed and not confirmed built.

How it is fished and who fishes it

How it is fished and who fishes it

Local outfits describe three approaches: giants, combo days, and a rod kept ready on the shoal.

Giants inshore and offshore

Hindsight works giant bluefin both inshore and offshore.

Tuna and bass combos

Liberty runs tuna and bass combo trips, late summer through fall. Anglers who fish stripers now and want to move up to bluefin can use this format as the step between the two.

A spinning rod ready on the shoal

The Billingsgate writer advises keeping spinning tackle ready for tuna while fishing the shoal. That means bass fishing the 15 ft top with the tuna rod already rigged.
