Sablefish fishing out of Newport: season and run

Sablefish fishing out of Newport: season and run

The dedicated sablefish trip out of Newport runs May through September. It goes 30 to 40 miles offshore, into water deeper than 700 ft, and takes 12 hours. Sablefish (black cod) are a long-range target for boats working out of Newport and Yaquina Bay. They also turn up on halibut days. The same fishery along the rest of the coast is in the Pacific Northwest offshore fishing guide.

For the fish itself, see our sablefish guide. This page covers when the fish are available here, how far and how deep you run, which grounds sit on the route, how black cod fit into halibut and bottomfish days, and who fishes for them out of this port.

When

May through September is the window for Yaquina Bay Charters’ dedicated black cod trip. That is the operator’s schedule and says nothing about when sablefish are absent from the water. Check the rules before you fish (see Regulations below).

How far and how deep

Boats run 30 to 40 miles offshore, into water deeper than 700 ft. That makes for a long-range day, and fuel, range and the official NOAA marine forecast decide whether the run happens. Work out the numbers before you leave the dock.

Trip length

The dedicated trip is 12 hours and limited to 12 experienced anglers. A private boat should use those numbers as a benchmark: plan to be out about as long as the charter is, with the run each way taking a large share of the day.

Ground or trip Distance Depth
Offshore rockfish and lingcod grounds About 10 to 15 miles from shore Deep water
Stonewall Bank (the Rock Pile) About 15 miles west of Newport 23 to 520 ft
Dedicated sablefish trip (Yaquina Bay Charters) 30 to 40 miles offshore Deeper than 700 ft

Grounds and structure off Newport

Grounds and structure off Newport

The route steps outward from inshore to deep water. The nearshore inner reefs sit at the inshore end. Stonewall Bank is about 15 miles out, and the offshore rockfish and lingcod grounds sit in deep water about 10 to 15 miles from shore. The sablefish water starts at 30 to 40 miles.

Stonewall Bank tops out at 520 ft, so it is not 700 ft water. It is a landmark on the way, and the sablefish water starts roughly 15 to 25 miles past it.

Stonewall Bank (the Rock Pile)

Locals call Stonewall Bank the Rock Pile. ODFW places it about 15 miles west of Newport. Depth runs from about 23 ft at the shallowest point to 520 ft.

The Stonewall Bank Yelloweye Rockfish Conservation Area sits here and carries its own ODFW restrictions, covered under Regulations. The bank is shallower than sablefish depth, so use it as a route reference.

Banana Bank, West Lighthouse, North Rockpile and Chicken Ranch

Banana Bank, West Lighthouse, North Rockpile and Chicken Ranch are the ground names you hear on the radio and at the dock near Newport. They work as reference points when you plot a route.

Nearshore reefs and offshore rockfish grounds

The nearshore inner reefs mark the inshore end of the route. The offshore rockfish and lingcod grounds, about 10 to 15 miles out, are where a combined bottomfish day starts. The sablefish water is roughly twice as far out or more, which shapes how you build the day (next section).

Finding 700 ft water

Use the Chart Contours layer in Breakpoint to find the 700 ft line on the route west. Chart layers are not for navigation. A contour shows charted depth, not where fish sit on a given day, so it tells you where to look but not whether fish are there.

How sablefish are fished here

How sablefish are fished here

ODFW allows sablefish to be combined with all-depth halibut trips and with long-leader or traditional bottomfish trips. That combination is the documented local practice, and it is why many Newport boats see black cod without running a dedicated trip.

For rigging and fishing water that deep, see our deep-drop coverage.

Combined with all-depth halibut

On an all-depth halibut day, black cod can come along under the ODFW combination rule. The regulations section below points to where the limits live.

Combined with bottomfish trips

The same rule covers long-leader and traditional bottomfish trips. The offshore rockfish and lingcod grounds are about 10 to 15 miles out and sablefish water is at 30 to 40 miles, so a combined day means committing the extra distance.

Incidental black cod

Newfin Charters and Good Time Charlie report black cod caught incidentally on halibut trips, and local press calls black cod a common halibut bycatch. If you keep catching them on halibut days, the combination rule is the reason that matters.

Who fishes for them out of Newport

Three groups fish sablefish from this port: a dedicated charter, halibut boats that pick them up on the way, and private skippers.

Yaquina Bay Charters

The Yaquina Bay Charters black cod trip, run with Newport Marina Store, has these terms:

  • May through September
  • 30 to 40 miles offshore
  • Water deeper than 700 ft
  • 12 hours
  • Limited to 12 experienced anglers

A private boat has to match that range and time.

Newfin Charters and Good Time Charlie

Newfin Charters, whose boat is the Bluefin, lists sablefish. See the Newfin Charters halibut trips page. Newfin and Good Time Charlie both report black cod caught incidentally on halibut trips.

Private boats

On your own boat, expect a 30 to 40 mile run each way, water deeper than 700 ft and a 12-hour day. The other option is to fold black cod into an all-depth halibut or bottomfish day. Either way, range and the forecast set the plan.

FAQ about sablefish fishing out of Newport

Is black cod the same as sablefish?

Yes. Black cod is the common name for sablefish. Newport charters and local press use "black cod."

What months can you fish sablefish out of Newport?

May through September is the window for Yaquina Bay Charters’ dedicated trip. Check ODFW before you fish.

How far offshore do boats run for black cod from Newport?

Boats run 30 to 40 miles offshore. Stonewall Bank, at about 15 miles, is a waypoint on the way and not the destination.

How deep is sablefish water off Newport?

Deeper than 700 ft. Stonewall Bank tops out at 520 ft, so it sits shallower than that.

Can I keep black cod on a halibut trip?

ODFW allows sablefish to be combined with all-depth halibut trips and with long-leader or traditional bottomfish trips. Local press calls black cod a common halibut bycatch. Check the rules before you fish.
