When wahoo are off Indian River Inlet

Wahoo fishing out of Indian River Inlet runs through summer and early fall, but the fish are not a daily bet. They come within range when a warm-water eddy moves close to shore, mostly early in the season, and the eddy determines whether a trip is worth making.
When one sets up, boats leave Indian River Inlet for Massey’s Canyon and the Hot Dog. For the species picture, see our wahoo fishing guide. For the wider range, read about wahoo in the Atlantic Northeast (see also the Atlantic Northeast region guide).
Where boats run for wahoo
Boats head for two places when a warm-water eddy comes close: Massey’s Canyon and the Hot Dog. Both are primarily tuna and dolphin grounds, and wahoo turn up on the same water.
Massey’s Canyon
Massey’s Canyon sits about 35 miles offshore from Indian River Inlet, in 80 ft, per DNREC. It is the longer run of the two, and boats make it when an early-season eddy has pushed warm water in close.
The Hot Dog
The Hot Dog is a tuna and dolphin ground, named in ProPTalk’s Indian River fishing spots. Boats run there for wahoo when a warm-water eddy comes close to shore.
Grounds and structure off the inlet

A string of named structure lies between the inlet and the canyon. Delaware Artificial Reef Site 9 is also named near the inlet, and the DNREC Delaware Reef Guide carries the site charts. The rest are in the table, ordered by distance.
| Ground | Depth | Distance and reference point | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delaware Artificial Reef Site 10 | 60 ft | 6 to 7 miles from the beach | FishTalk |
| Old Grounds | 13 miles off the bell on a 113 heading | ProPTalk | |
| Delaware Artificial Reef Site 11 (Redbird Reef) | 75 ft | About 18 miles from the inlet | FishTalk |
| Del-Jersey-Land Reef | 22 miles southeast of the inlet | ProPTalk | |
| USS Arthur W. Radford wreck group | About 28 miles from the inlet | FishTalk | |
| Massey’s Canyon | 80 ft | About 35 miles offshore from Indian River Inlet | DNREC |
Reading the reference points
The figures do not share a starting point. Some are measured from the beach, some from the inlet, and the Old Grounds figure is off the bell. Plot each one from its own reference point rather than reading the list as a single scale.
How wahoo are fished here

Trolling is the local method. Wahoo share these grounds and the trolling spread with tuna and dolphin, so the spread you run for those species is the one that raises wahoo. The offshore gamefish guides cover them.
Ballyhoo
Indian River Marina reports have logged wahoo on ballyhoo.
Spreader bars
The same marina reports have logged wahoo on spreader bars, fished in the trolling spread alongside the rigged bait.
Who fishes for them from this port
Owner-operators make the run on their own boats. The planning work is in the distances from the table: pick the ground, plot it from its reference point, and decide whether the eddy has brought the fish within range.
Quick Draw Sport Fishing
Quick Draw Sport Fishing is the local charter that lists wahoo. It runs a 46-foot Ocean Yacht Super Sport, per the state marina list.
