Sailfish fishing out of Ocean Isle Beach: the short version

Sailfish fishing out of Ocean Isle Beach: the short version

Sailfish out of Ocean Isle Beach are found in the same offshore band as wahoo and blackfin, around the 30-fathom break (about 180 ft). Boats leave through Shallotte Inlet or Lockwood Folly Inlet, and locals troll skirted ballyhoo. The Ocean Isle Beach port page covers ramps, inlets and where to read conditions.

This page covers the run, the structure you cross, how the fish are caught here, who runs charters, and where the rules live.

  • Band: the 30-fathom break, shared with wahoo and blackfin
  • Inlets: Shallotte Inlet and Lockwood Folly Inlet
  • Bait: skirted ballyhoo, trolled offshore

Where boats run and when the fish are there

Where boats run and when the fish are there

Boats leave an inlet, cross the reefs and ledges, and work the 30-fathom break.

Leaving Shallotte or Lockwood Folly

Shallotte Inlet is the closest departure to Ocean Isle Beach, and Lockwood Folly Inlet is the other option. Structure on the way out is measured from different inlets, so check which one a number refers to:

  • Jolly Mon Reef sits just outside Shallotte Inlet.
  • Dale Ward Reef is about 7 nm from Shallotte Inlet.
  • Dale McDowell Reef is about 9.3 nm from Lockwood Folly Inlet.
  • Both inlets have ledges in 100 ft of water.

The 30-fathom break

Sailfish here share the offshore band with wahoo and blackfin, around the 30-fathom break. The reefs in the table below serve as waypoints on the way out.

Timing

Timing follows the band. When wahoo and blackfin are on the 30-fathom break, that is the water to look at for sailfish. The sailfish species guide covers biology, temperature and the general seasonal picture, and the Atlantic Southeast sailfish picture (see also the Atlantic Southeast offshore fishing guide) covers the regional one.

Grounds and structure on the way out

Grounds and structure on the way out

These reefs and ledges are stops and waypoints between the inlet and the break. They are structure on the run, and sailfish are not targeted on them.

Name ID Depth (ft) Distance / location
Jim Caudle Reef PA-01 30 Just outside Little River Inlet
Jim Knight Reef AR-430 35
Jolly Mon Reef (Fisherman’s Reef in one vendor list) AR-460 38 Just outside Shallotte Inlet
Brunswick County Fishing Club Reef AR-440
Dale Ward Reef AR-455 46 About 7 nm from Shallotte Inlet
Dale McDowell Reef AR-445 53 About 9.3 nm from Lockwood Folly Inlet
Shallotte Inlet ledges 100
Lockwood Folly Inlet ledges 100

Depth steps from 30 ft at the near reefs to 100 ft at the ledges, before the band at about 30 fathoms. Dale Ward is measured from Shallotte Inlet and Dale McDowell from Lockwood Folly Inlet, so the two distances should not be added together on one line.

Chart layers are not for navigation. Use official charts for the run.

How it is fished here

The local method is offshore trolling with skirted ballyhoo. Ocean Isle Fishing Center’s 12-hour Gulf Stream trolling lists sailfish. For spread and rigging technique, see the broader billfish technique.

Reading conditions before the run

NDBC 41013 Frying Pan Shoals (33.44 N, 77.76 W) is the nearest NOAA buoy. It sits far offshore, so it does not describe the inlet bars or the nearshore reefs. Its useful readings are wind, wave height and period. Check the NWS Wilmington marine forecast before you run.

Who fishes for them out of this port

Two operators list sailfish from this port:

  • Ocean Isle Fishing Center (Capt. Brant’s Fishing Adventures, Inc.): boats include a 33-ft World Cat / Carolina Cat, a 22-ft Get Busy and a 22-ft Tiberias. Its 12-hour Gulf Stream trolling lists sailfish. See Ocean Isle Fishing Center for trips and boats.
  • Hey Now Charters: a 33-ft Contender tournament center console with twin 350 Yamaha outboards.

Fishing a charter first is one way to see the run before taking your own boat out.

They run to the band shared with wahoo and blackfin, around the 30-fathom break. Reef waypoints run out to about 9.3 nm (Dale McDowell Reef, AR-445, from Lockwood Folly Inlet), before the 100-ft ledges.

Which inlet do boats use?

Shallotte Inlet or Lockwood Folly Inlet. Jolly Mon Reef (AR-460) sits just outside Shallotte Inlet.

What bait do locals troll?

Skirted ballyhoo, trolled offshore.

Which charters list sailfish?

Ocean Isle Fishing Center, with 12-hour Gulf Stream trolling, and Hey Now Charters, which runs a 33-ft Contender tournament center console.
